I want to corroborate a couple of Lissa’s statements.

I was Martha Beck’s CEO during the time she mentioned and I can corroborate that Martha desperately wanted to meet Byron Katie and used Lissa to gain access.

When Katie “slipped” and her mask fell off during the taping Lissa mentioned, everyone freaked out. Stephen Mitchell (Katie’s husband) called Beck as she was driving home from the taping. During that call, it was decided that Lissa was an interloping opportunist (Beck threw her under the bus and Katie conveniently forgot that she’d said yes to the taping) and that Mitchell would have his attorneys contact Lissa and push her to not publish the interview with Katie. Lissa, I’m so sorry that happened to you.

Martha Beck is a notorious climber who easily discards people when she’s done with them. She’s done this to “dear” friends of hers along with many associates. And that’s just the tip of the iceburg.

I also corroborate what Lissa reported about the true nature of Byron Katie. She has an enlightened persona that she puts on where she claims to have no preferences, no ego, and that gosh, she can barely exist in this realm without the help of her devoted husband. Meanwhile she’s a secret rager (I’ve spoken with people who worked for her who are bound by NDAs) who’s absolutely in charge of her carefully curated image.

As someone who worked in personal development for many years, it’s well known that many of these teachers are fakers, assholes, and at the worst, perverts like we’re seeing with Chopra. (Marianne Williamson and Caroline Myss are well known ragers.)

I, like Lissa, was first reluctant to speak out because when I first left Martha Beck’s company (ironically to consult for Chopra’s company) she retaliated against me and tried to get me fired. There’s a lot more I won’t get into, but suffice to say I was incredibly traumatized and just needed to focus on pulling my shattered life together.

While I cannot corroborate everything that Lissa has shared here, I can relate to all of it and have had enough similar experiences to know that this is how the industry really is. The shit-talking, the insecurity, the racism, the sheer amount of bullshit and off-the-charts narcissism. And the lengths these people will go to protect their reputations. Which would all be normal human stuff if these people weren’t pretending to be above it all. Thats what rankles. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve coached who were holding themselves to some standard of success or spiritual purity that just did not exist.

I, like Lissa, stayed mostly quiet at first because I was scared, and then because I didn’t want to burst anyone’s bubble who might be getting some value from a teacher or influencer.

But now, I think it’s time that we collectively grow the fuck up, face the truth, and leave the gurus behind.

We are truly the ones we’ve been waiting for.

Lissa, this article is amazing and so needed. I'm feeling like we need a lot of truth telling to find our way out the mess we are currently in. But I'm like you - I'm actually really hopeful that the more we tell the truth, the more we can find our way home. I've been doing some pretty deep analysis into the patterns that are lying under a lot of what we are both seeing. I'll be sharing them as I can complete them on substack. I couldn't find a way to message you directly but I'd love to chat with you about it. Thank you again for leading the way. I know being first is hard. I know that you are taking the hit for the team and making way for others to speak. The dam is breaking and you are holding a big hammer. I can't express enough how much I appreciate you and this article. Sharing now.
